Important Announcement about Magento Go and ProStores. The European Commission has just published a policy concerning the implementation of the European Union’s e-commerce regulation, the EU e-Commerce Directive. This policy is directly linked to Magento, because many of the members of the European Commission are also investors of Magento Development Europe, the holding company of Magento Inc., and also one of the largest shareholders of the parent company, Investec. Therefore, this important announcement was released just after the end of the Commission’s current year, which happens to be the Magento Year. As a consequence of the Policy, the future of Magento and its affiliate companies such as Commerce Stores, Nixxie etc. will not be covered in any of the upcoming policies.
So, what exactly does this Policy mean for the e-commerce websites of Magento Inc.? It means that there will be a ban on any kind of activities such as advertising or direct selling through the promotion of these products through the use of Magento interfaces. This includes not only the content but also the banners, the logos, the videos, and any other kind of content developed by the owners of these sites. Both these products have been popular among the customers of both eBay and Google and thus, there is no doubt that they deserve better treatment than what they are getting. This Policy affects all the e-commerce platforms of both bigcommerce and eBay alike, since they are directly involved in the process of conversion of information and data to make them visible to the customers of each of these websites.
From the point of view of the operators of the websites, what does this mean? On one side, it means that the Magento Go and ProStores operations will no longer be able to generate revenue from the advertisements of these products. This is on the basis of the fact that their pages are being traced by Google Analytics, a special kind of analytics program developed by Google. If you use any other analytics system, such as Yahoo! 360, you will not be traced by Google.
At the same time, we can see the other side of this problem. Since Google has traced the pages of these two giants, we can conclude that users will no longer be able to access the products on their websites. This will be a great issue for owners of these e-commerce platforms since they will no longer be able to generate revenue through the use of Magento interfaces. But on the other hand, it is also true that users of the two platforms will still be able to access products, since Google has disabled the functionality of cookies on the websites of these platforms…
The above mentioned Problem was caused by a wrong implementation of the «meta data» feature in Magento Go. It was updated automatically, but unfortunately, the change affected all the stored information of the customers. Due to this reason, many customer information will not be correct. And in the future, it will be difficult to prove the identity of a person who purchased something using your credit card.
Another huge Problem that developers of bigcommerce face at the moment is about the «spider» behavior. Every single page of the store is checked by Google. So if a website has recently been built or published, then it might be that the spider will find some errors inside the meta data of the page. The easiest way to solve this kind of problem is to submit your site to a search engine indexing company like Google Places, Yahoo Places, AllFeeds Local and Bing Local. Also, it’s highly recommended to update your site frequently and get the latest algorithms from all major search engines.
